Eulogy for my father

July 30, 2019 by kieranagle

My father, Robert Emmet Nagle, was born in June of 1944, one of four boys born to Eleanor Carr and James Nagle. His early life was full of love and loss, which served to shape him into the man we would all come to know and love. He was named for the Irish poet, orator and rebel, Robert Emmet, whose spirit would be reflected in our Robert’s life and work as well. Bob, as most here knew him, recently told […]

Why I love what I do…

March 24, 2015 by kieranagle

This article will be published in the Spring 2015 Oriental Medicine Newspaper: Oriental Medicine (OM News) | Digital. I believe massage therapy has a ripple effect–a radiating energy, an extension of our clients’ own healing processes, on through to the other humans within their circle. In our work with pregnant clients, this connection is even more obvious, and infinitely rewarding. When we work with a woman who is carrying another human inside her, we are essentially working with two […]

In my tribe

January 28, 2015 by kieranagle

As I sit down on the night of the first snow day of the year, while the streets are being plowed, I think about road blocks, about clearing the way for things. I think about       pave-the-wayers, people who looked at the supposed obstructions of race/class/gender/whatever and responded by not allowing themselves to be boxed in to a set of limitations. I wonder at how not so long ago, messages traveled slow, down dirt rows, on pieces of […]

Enough

December 31, 2014 by kieranagle

I can only pretend to have nothing. Why would one pretend such a thing? Perhaps when you are overwhelmed with something, with everything. Perhaps when you have had enough, more than enough. In 2007, I left NYC, I had had enough. I went away from all of this, towards open spaces, with “nothing” but sky, fields of grass, clouds. I would maybe become a big fish in a little pond, rather than a tear in the ocean. I would go. […]

Home(sickness)

October 13, 2014 by kieranagle

Homesickness is defined in the dictionary as “longing for home and family while absent from them” (Merriam Webster). But dig a little further, or surf a few pages over, and you will discover that “homesickness” is now a diagnosable disorder, according to the DSM, consisting of both “depressive and anxious symptoms, as well as withdrawn behaviors and difficulty focusing on topics unrelated to home.” (Wikipedia). There exists both “CHS”- Chronic Homesickness, which seems to correlate to individuals with passive aggressive behavior, […]

Edging in…

September 2, 2014 by kieranagle

I hope your summers were sweet and you slip swiftly into September, full of the momentum of long days and warmer air, retaining what you can of the summer energy as the Fall edges its way in… I am tingling with something at this moment (anxiety? anticipation?)… based on a lifetime of new school years, even though I am “the teacher” now, I remain the student always, hoping to learn something new about my self and others through the processes of […]

Blueberry Medicine

July 23, 2014 by kieranagle

It’s been awhile since I posted… have I really not had a moment to myself since Mother’s Day? It’s possible, we mamas know that. I am on vacation this week, and inevitably my little guy took it upon himself to contract a yukky virus. So yeah, the first few days off were not so fun. But, ever the optimist (despite my NYC upbringing) I tried to look at it as a chance to bond with my boy. Cuz if he […]

Stop and smell the lilacs, mamas

May 10, 2014 by kieranagle

It’s pretty cool how Mother Nature has such perfect timing. An old friend of mine, raised in the theater, always used to say “God is timing.” Somehow, every year, the lilacs always bloom just in time for mother’s day. They are my mother’s favorite flower. They weren’t always mine, I used to be more of a Van Gogh sunflower kind of girl, but I have grown into them. I like the duality of the delicate nature of their tiny window […]

“The wound is the place where the light enters you.” Rumi

April 27, 2014 by kieranagle

“Things are not always what they seem.” Phaedrus (c. 15 BC – c. 50 AD) “The wound is the place where the light enters you.” Rumi (c. 1207-1273 AD) “There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”  Edith Wharton (c. 1862-1937) What is Gua Sha? From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Gua sha (Chinese: 刮痧; pinyin: guā shā), meaning “scraping sha-bruises“, is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising. Practitioners believe gua sha releases […]

Love and the Lone Ranger

February 15, 2014 by kieranagle

Happy Valentine’s Day, y’all! Thank you for being, as the saying goes. My addendum to that is, thank you for being (human with me). We have all had some experiences with people where we feel we have been treated unfairly, irrationally, inhumanely, or as less than human. How do we cope with those experiences without the need for reciprocal negativity, revenge, etc.? How do we manifest love for someone who has hurt us? How do we keep one of the Four […]
